Is Your Water Safe?

Water is indeed so important to every metabolic function in the body.  Even if you don’t completely understand the science, you know that you feel better when you are well hydrated (and even more so, feel way worse when dehydrated!).

There’s an important factor when it comes to water that many people fail to consider… that is, that we “drink” through our skin.  Showering and bathing in city/municipal water or swimming/soaking in chlorinated pools or hot tubs can have similar ill effects to that of drinking this same water.  Toxic halogens such as fluoride and chlorine that are commonly added to city water (and of course most pools/hot tubs) are associated with many health challenges, including cancer.1  The issues with pools specifically pertains to toxins absorbed through the skin as well as respiratory issues associated with breathing the toxins in while swimming (or soaking in hot tubs).2  I never want to see people trying to help their health by drinking water or swimming for exercise but inadvertently harm their health by water that’s infused with toxins!

One other factor that I might add that I talk about a lot with clients is the quality of the water.  So many people are working hard to drink plenty of water but, if they’re drinking contaminated water such as most municipal/city water, they are also without knowing also taking in a lot of toxic material as well.  I always hate to see someone working so hard to do something good for themselves and not getting a good effect or worse, getting a harmful effect.  Substances in drinking water such as fluoride3, chlorine1 and others can have a detrimental impact on the microbiome4 and other areas of health.

So what can you do about it?

  1. For drinking water, unless you live next to a fresh live spring, distilled or reverse osmosis is the best water to get.  Some argue that these aren’t good because they’ve been stripped of minerals.  This is true, but the priority is to get water that is SAFE/clean/void of toxins; minerals are secondary as it’s easy to either get minerals from FOOD, or just add some pH Minerals or Pink Salt to your water.  You can install a reverse osmosis machine in your kitchen or buy gallons of distilled or RO water.  If you’re drinking what you should be, buying water by the gallon is a pain because you’ll likely need 10+ gallons/week for drinking, cooking, etc… but it’s worth it until you can get an RO system installed.
  2. For showering, get a good quality filter that can eliminate halogens like chlorine and fluoride.  Here’s the one I use.
  3. When traveling or at a hotel, I take quick showers that are warm but not hot.  The hotter the water the more it opens your pores, making it easier for toxins to enter the body through the skin.
  4. If you have a pool or hot tub at home, consider alternatives to chlorine.  If you must swim or soak in a chlorinated pool, afterward, consider showering with pure filtered water and open 1 capsule of Medi-Clay into a cup of pure water.  This will help counter the ill effects.
